San Francisco and Napa Valley Engagement Session Ideas

I always get asked is an engagement photography session necessary and I would say a resounding YES! First of all it’s super fun and you get to connect with your fiance in a way you never have. And secondly, it really allows you to get to know your wedding photographer and the way they work. Then, on your wedding day you have that feeling of trust and, “Oh yes, I remember this!” It really helps you relax on the day of your wedding because you’ve done some of these poses and have seen the engagment session photos and know how it came out! So, Yes, Hire a professional wedding photographer for an engagement session before the big day! Here are some photos from engagement sessions I have photographed in the San Francisco Bay area, Napa Valley and Sonoma.

This engagement photo was taken at Fort Point right smack under the Golden Gate Bridge. It has spectacular views of San Francisco and the bay on the rooftop.

Fun and so in love is what this wedding engagement photo says and we took advantage of magic hour in the vineyards close to the Estate at Villagio in Yountville where they were getting married.

A Silhouette kiss under the Golden Gate Bridge when the sun is really golden is a perfect wedding engagement photo and one to frame for sure!

Finding a rustic barn with character and patina is perfect as a backdrop for a wedding engagement photo. I love the ease and casualness in this photograph.

Night time wedding engagement photography on a pier in San Francisco is so dramatic as the lights just add to the allure! I love this emotional engagement photo!

Posing at Fort Point in the many cozy crevices lends for a very creative and artistic wedding engagement photograph!

WEDDING COUPLE POSES, IDEAS AND WEDDING VENUES IN SAN FRANCISCO, NAPA, and SONOMA

Posing your wedding couple photographs can be daunting to some people but I believe with a little direction from your wedding photographer you can have some really organic and authentic photos. I always think the best wedding couple photos are the ones that come the most natural to you and bring out your true essence and the love between the two of you! Here are some examples of poses for your couple photographs on your wedding day! Below is a very fun and dramatic dip I photographed at The Estate at Hotel Villagio in Yountville, CA. The fountain in the background gives off beautiful ambient backlighting making the spray highlight this couple.

This is a very natural wedding couple’s pose of walking towards your wedding photographer. This wedding couple photo was taken at Trentadue Winery in Sonoma County.  Wineries are the most magical backdrop for a wedding venue.  Strolling through the vineyards on your wedding day during Golden Hour after you just exchanged your vows is magical for wedding photographers and the reason why many weddings and elopements happen in the wine country. Trentadue Winery is in Sonoma County near Healdsberg, CA
With all the vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley every wedding couple would love to have a photograph of them with the grape vines. I thin a beautiful pose is to have the couple lean in for a kiss and then I photograph them though the vines with a short depth of field so I blow out the leaves and make them out of focus. This wedding couple photo was taken at Viansa Winery near Sonoma.

Ideas for Wedding Couple Portraits in San Francisco and Napa Valley

Wedding Photographer at Calistoga Ranch in Calistoga, CA. Castello di Amorosa in Sonoma Napa Wedding Photographer. Jessica and Jake.

Jessica and Jake were too cute.  They had a very intimate ceremony at Calistoga Ranch and then we went on an excursion to Castello di Amorosa in Napa Wine Country and took some more photos.  We had such a fun time sipping champagne and snapping photos.  I mean, come on….it’s wine country so when in Rome….Wish these two a lifetime of more adventures together.

San Francisco Wedding Photographer. Petaluma Photographer. Chrissy Fields, San Francisco. Murali and Prista.

So sometimes the internet can work in mysterious ways and Murali and Prista found my work online from Singapore and wanted to do an engagement session while they were in San Francisco.  We had a blast together and I hope they are snuggled as two bugs in a rug back in Singapore.  xoxo

Oakland Wedding Photographer. Berkeley City Club Wedding. Showing and Micah.

Couldn’t be more excited about photographing at The Berkeley City Club with all it’s timeless architecture and history.  It was a super fun wedding and Showing and Micah were thrilled to tie the knot at this historic landmark. Showing even had Micah compete in a warrior competition.  Which he completed with all his fervor!  He’s gonna make a good husband…. Congratulations to you both!

Wedding Photographer at Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael, Marin County. Mariya and Evan.

Mariya and Evan are two of the kindest souls and smart….did I mention smart?  Oh boy they smart and they got the degrees from ivy league schools to prove it.  But they are kind too which makes you just love them anymore.  I loved being the wedding photographer for these two and especially at The Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael in Marin County.  The place screams to me, The Royal Tenenbaums, the movie that starred Gwenyth Paltrow.  So it has all it’s quirky grooves and crannies and the place seems to take on a persona in itself.  I really can get lost taking wedding portraits in the gardens or in the parlor on the french love seat —well basically all over the mansion.  I love these two and hope they continue to have the best times of their lives together.  And being that these two are so smart…I’m sure they’ll do just that.

Wedding Photographer at Hotel Vitale in San Francisco near The Ferry Building. Viktoria and Eric.

Viktoria and Eric love their city by the bay, San Francisco, and wanted to see all the iconic sights so having their wedding at Hotel Vitale on the gorgeous rooftop seemed like the perfect idea.  Check out the view of the bay and The Ferry Building as Viktoria tosses her bouquet to the deck below.  Such an amazing venue for your San Francisco wedding and I love being the wedding photographer at Hotel Vitale as it’s located in the Embarcadero in the middle of everything that is San Francisco.  I hope Viktoria and Eric have so many more wonderful adventures together and wish  them a lifetime of happiness!

Wedding photographer at The Generals Residence and Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco Bay Area. Leah and Aria.

Leah and Aria are so much fun as you can see by the groomsmen in their matching red boxer shorts! They chose The Generals Residence in the San Francisco Bay for it’s incredible views and historical meaning. But for the bridal party portraits they couldn’t resist choosing a The Palace of Fine Arts for the background of their wedding photography.  Such an exceptional couple with so much love for one another! xoxo

Wedding Photographer at Thomas Fogarty Winery in Redwood City in San Francisco Bay Area. Peiwan and Buddy.

Peiwan and Buddy had the most beautifully emotional wedding ceremony at Thomas Fogarty Winery in Redwood City in the South Peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area.  It sits high up on a bluff where the fog rolls in auspiciously and makes such a mystical addition to artistic wedding photography.  It was such a beautiful day with peonies and the most magnificent florals throughout the event.  Wishing Peiwan and Buddy the most wonderful lives together and many more wine tastings together at this spectacular venue.

Wedding and engagement photographer in San Francisco Bay Area. Engagement photo session in Monument Valley looks like a movie…Abigail and Ian.

Here’s the formula for an engagement shoot that looks like film stills from a cool western film full of adventure, intrigue, and romance…

We road tripped for a weekend to Monument Valley — once we were there, we explored Native American reservations, the arches, and had a blast!  Abigail and Ian were going to get married at Viansa Winery but wanted a different feeling for their engagement photography.  As a wedding and engagement photographer in San Francisco I was more than thrilled to get to road trip and take awesome engagement photos in an artistic and editorial way in the red sand dunes.  Such an incredible engagement session as the photos speak for themselves.  Wait until the wedding in Sonoma Valley at Viansa Winery--the heart of wine country!
